Government in AlbanyAlbany was designated as the State Capital in 1797, and as is the second oldest chartered city in the United States. Albany’s rich history is prominently displayed throughout the City, including its rich architecture and venerable institutions. Elected officials of the City of Albany are designated by the Dongan Charter. This Charter provides for the separation and balance of legislative and executive functions and responsibilities in order to promote clarity, efficiency, and responsibility within City government.
